Continuing on the mellow and peaceful side of things, in these new images I wanted to capture the calmer side of surfing. Those beautiful, quiet moments when it’s just you (or you and a few friends) and the humbling vastness of the ocean.
I photographed these images at Good Harbor Beach in Gloucester, MA in late winter / early spring. I love how quiet the beach is that time of year, and the soft winter light that creates those beautiful muted pastel colors.
The clouds are almost always interesting that time of year too, and even when they’re not in spectacular formations, they become such an impactful backdrop. My favorites are overcast days when the sky and water have the same color and you can barely make out the horizon, and when a solid cloud cover (with perhaps a glimmer of light) provide a powerful contrast against a silver-colored, calm ocean.
