A LITTLE

ABOUT ME

WELCOME, FRIEND!

It’s great to meet you

Hi! I’m Cattie Coyle, a travel and fine art photographer capturing details, patterns, and quiet moments in coastal locations around the world.

ABOUT ME
I was born in Stockholm, Sweden and grew up on the beautiful and magical island of Gotland, where I spent most of my childhood on the beach and in and on the water. Growing up like that made me a lifelong beach and ocean lover, and whenever I’m away from the ocean, I miss it like crazy.

MY TERRIBLE EYESIGHT TAUGHT ME HOW TO REALLY SEE
I picked up photography in my early teens because of my poor eyesight. Before anyone realized I needed glasses, I saw everything as a pretty and blurry haze, and looked at things in a very different way. I either noticed the tiniest detail since I had to look at everything really close to be able to see it, and for scenes farther in the distance, rather than seeing “things”, I noticed how they felt (emotionally) and how the quality of the light changed that feeling at different times of day, and in different seasons. When I finally got glasses, it was a bit of a shock to the system; everything looked almost painfully sharp, and I missed that soft, quiet world I was used to.

But of course I couldn’t go through life like that, so I resigned myself to wearing glasses / contacts. But when I realized that a camera could help me record and share the little details and the feelings I had been seeing, and liked to see, I was hooked.

After many years of “shooting for fun,” I went back to school for classical photography training with large format cameras and darkroom printing. At that point, life had landed me in the US and I graduated from the New England School of Photography (NESOP) in Boston, MA in 1994.

ABOUT THE PHOTOGRAPHS
My work is often described as tranquil and soothing; images that carry you away. I’m inspired by abstract details, the quality of light, the atmosphere of a scene, and the stillness on quiet days. My art prints are usually less about what you see, and more about how you feel when you look at them. My travel photography is more documentary in style, but I still always try to convey the feeling of a place, rather than just document it, My goal with every image is to capture and preserve a moment and the mood that accompanies it.

I’m very rarely without my camera, but when I am, you’ll either find me on the beach, or catching up with friends over a glass of wine

but i’ll probably still have at least one camera with me, just in case… 🙂

My favorite way to see a new place is to head out and discover it on my own, camera in hand. I feel like you never see a place the same way twice, and those first impressions are so powerful. My favorite travel images are often the ones I take on that first stroll when everything is new and I don’t know what to expect.
