Côte d’Azur: The Mediterranean From Above

new work: Côte d’Azur

My latest series from the Côte d’Azur is a bit different from my usual work, but I just couldn’t resist these beautiful vibrant shades of blue, teal, and turquoise, and the abstract patterns of the floor of the Mediterranean. I love the little pops of color that the kayaks and standup paddle board adds to the images too.

Several people have asked me if these were shot with a drone or from a helicopter, and the answer is neither!

I photographed this series from the Basse Corniche, the lowest of the three cliff roads that run along the Riviera from Nice to Menton with the mountains on one side and the Mediterranean on the other.

I walked the Basse Corniche from Villefranche-sur-Mer to Cap d’Ail on a beautiful day in June a few years ago. There are cool tunnels, one thrilling / terrifying hairpin turn after another, and of course endless breathtaking views. The elevation varies – sometimes you’re pretty close to sea level, other times you have a bird’s eye view.

The walk took me about 5 hours and was absolutely spectacular. I can’t wait to do it again! I’ve written more about it in this blog post: Walking France: Villefranche-sur-Mer to Cap d’Ail.
